🚴‍♂️ Kerenzerberg Pass — Basic Facts
  • Location: Canton of Glarus, Switzerland (Alps) — connects Mollis and Mühlehorn above Lake Walensee.
  • Elevation: about 743 m (relatively low for Alpine passes).
  • There’s a motorway tunnel (A3) under the pass for cars — cyclists must use the old road / local roads, not the motorway tunnel.
🗓️ Open / Closed Status
Unlike very high Alpine passes (Furka, Gotthard, Grimsel), Kerenzerberg isn’t a high mountain pass that’s seasonally closed due to snow at >2000 m.
  • The road itself is a lower-altitude local pass road, and seasonal closure due to snow is not typically reported for Kerenzerberg the way it is higher up in the Alps. However, official dynamic status is not easy to find online.
  • For most of the year (spring–autumn) the road and bike route are usable if weather is reasonable.
  • In winter months, especially after snowfall (which can occur even at lower alpine elevations), parts of the road or related local roads may be icy, wet, or technically harder to cycle, even if not “officially closed” — always check local road condition services or TCS Strasseninfo for real‑time updates before you go.
⚠️ Important for cyclists: Swiss alpine pass status can change rapidly with weather — snow or heavy rain may lead to temporary closures or dangerous conditions even on lower passes.
🌦️ Weather Expectations Around Kerenzerberg
Direct pass weather forecasts aren’t readily published like big ski resorts, but general Alpine weather patterns apply:
❄️ Winter / Early Spring
  • At elevations ~700 ‑ 1000 m, temperatures can be near or below freezing.
  • Snow can reach road level after cold fronts; icy spots and snow patches are possible in winter/early spring.
🌧️ Variable Conditions
  • Alpine regions see rapid weather changes — sunny one moment, showers or fog the next. This especially affects descents where cold air pools and surfaces remain slick.
  • Even with clear valley weather, higher slopes might have wind, colder air, and precipitation.
🌞 Summer / Shoulder Seasons
  • Better conditions (warmer and dry roads) are typical May–October when most cyclists ride Alpine passes.
  • Morning fog or low clouds can still occur; afternoons often clearer.
For very current conditions, check:
  • MeteoSchweiz forecasts for the Glarus Alps or Walensee region before your ride.
  • Swiss road/weather services (e.g., TCS traffic info) for pass road closures or advisories.
📍 Route Notes for Cyclists
  • The old pass road and adjacent local roads are scenic and suitable for road cycling or gravel/bike‑packing, but be aware:
    • Sections can be steep (~10 %) and require good handling.
    • Surfaces vary — some parts are narrow roads.
  • The area is also well known for mountain bike trails, including an old route along the pass area managed by SchweizMobil.
🧠 Summary
Kerenzerberg Pass (743 m) itself does not have a formal high‑Alpine seasonal closure like many higher passes do. It is typically rideable spring–autumn if weather is good, and useable in winter only with caution, as snow/ice or slick road surfaces can make cycling difficult. Always check real‑time forecasts and Swiss road condition services before heading out. The pass offers scenic Alpine riding, but conditions can change quickly with altitude and local weather systems.
