🚴♂️ Seasonal Access & Opening/Closing of Grosse Scheidegg
🗓 When the Road is Passable
- The paved mountain road between Meiringen and Grindelwald climbs to 1,962 m and is closed by snow in winter.
- Typical opening (passable): mid-May to late May — usually around 15–20 May.
- Typical closing for winter: mid-late October.
📆 For example:
- 2025 season: approx 10 May – 20 October.
- 2026 expected: opening around 14 May 2026 (Ascension Day) with bus service resuming.
👉 Private motor traffic is prohibited all year, but only PostBus public buses run in season, making this road very attractive for cyclists.
🏔 General Year-Round Weather & Cycling Conditions
❄️ Winter / Early Spring (Nov – Apr)
- Snow covers much of the road at altitude; temperatures are often below 0 °C above ~1,500 m.
- Cycling is not feasible at summit elevations without snow cycling gear and experience.
- Weather is unpredictable and snow can persist well into April on shaded sections. Anecdotal reports suggest hiking/cycling above ~1,500 m in April is snow-covered and potentially unsafe.
🌦 Late Spring (May)
- Initially just after opening, snowbanks may still sit alongside the road at the top.
- Daytime temps vary widely (from cold near summit early, up to mild in valleys). It’s common to be near freezing at altitude in early season rainy or overcast weather and warm in sunshine.
☀️ Summer (Jun – Aug)
- Best cycling season — reliable dry pavement with minimal snow and stable weather.
- Daytime summit temps on fine days often range from cool to mild (e.g., 5 – 15 °C), while lower valleys can be significantly warmer.
- Thunderstorms can still occur in afternoons, especially July/August (classic Alpine weather pattern).
🍁 Autumn / Shoulder Season (Sep – Oct)
- Warm early autumn days are ideal for riding.
- Weather starts cooling significantly by mid-October, with snow possible at higher elevations.
- Roads may still be clear, but early closures can happen if early snowfall is heavy.

🧳 Cyclist Tips
- Clothing: Layers are essential — even in summer it can be cool and windy at the top.
- Timing: Aim to be at higher elevation early in the day before possible afternoon thunderstorms.
- Buses: The PostBus operates seasonally; cyclists share the road with buses, which have priority.
🧾 Short Summary
Grosse Scheidegg is generally open to cyclists from about mid-May to mid-late October each year, depending on snow conditions and local weather. Outside that window, snow makes the pass impassable for typical road cycling. During open season, summer offers the most stable and pleasant conditions, with cool summit temperatures and warm valley approaches. Early spring and late autumn rides require careful planning — snow remnants and cold weather at altitude are common in May and October.
