🗻 Col du Galibier: Seasonal Access
🟦 Winter — Late Oct / Nov to Late May / Early June
  • The pass is closed to traffic and cyclists due to heavy snow and unsafe conditions. Roads are buried under snow at this altitude (~2,642 m).
  • Snow removal usually begins in April or May, but it takes several weeks to clear deep snow.
🟩 Spring / Early Summer — Late May to Mid-June
  • The tunnel below the summit (Col du Galibier Tunnel at ~2,556 m) often opens first – typically at the end of May or first week of June. Full summit access for cyclists may come 1–2 weeks later as snow is cleared above.
  • Some years the pass doesn’t open fully until mid-June, especially after heavy winters.
🌞 Summer — Mid-June to September
  • This is the main cycling season. Roads are usually open and generally rideable.
  • Weather is highly variable:
    • Warm, dry and sunny in valleys.
    • Cold and changeable at the summit, with possible rain, snow flurries, strong winds and temperatures near or even below freezing at times.
🍂 Autumn — Late September to October
  • Still rideable early in the season. As temperatures drop and snow returns higher up, the pass may close as early as September–October
  • Late October is typically the latest closure before winter returns.
🌦️ General Weather Conditions to Expect by Season
❄️ Winter
  • Persistent snow, ice, and closed roads; not suitable for cycling.
🌤️ Spring
  • Snowmelt and unstable conditions. Lower elevations might be pleasant, but the summit often remains cold.
  • Risk of late snowstorms even into early June.
☀️ Summer
  • Valley bases can be hot (20–30 °C+), but summit temperatures often stay cool to cold, especially early mornings and evenings.
  • Afternoon thunderstorms are common in the Alps — potential for rain, hail, and rapid drops in temperature.
  • Even in July/August it’s wise to bring wind and waterproof layers.
🍁 Autumn
  • Cooler days and shorter daylight.
  • Early snow can arrive, especially at higher elevation — conditions can deteriorate quickly.
🧭 Cyclist Tips & What to Bring
  • Layers: Windbreaker, arm/leg warmers, light thermal and waterproof protection.
  • Start early: Weather is more stable and traffic usually lighter in the morning.
  • Plenty of hydration & food: Limited water points near the highest sections.
  • Check real-time conditions before you go — local tourist offices or regional road status sites are best.
📌 Typical Opening Window
Typically fully open for cyclists: Mid-June to Late September/Early October
Closed: Late October through May (variable yearly)
📎 Short Summary
Col du Galibier is one of the highest paved Alpine passes and only open for cyclists in summer, generally mid-June through early October. Outside this window, snow and winter conditions close the road. Weather at 2,642 m is highly unpredictable — expect everything from warm sunshine in valleys to cold storms, wind, and even snow at the summit. Always check recent local updates and bring appropriate layers for changing mountain weather.
