• Officially open all year: From January 1 to December 31 (there’s no fixed seasonal closure published), but:
  • The pass is only traversable when there is no snow cover and conditions are safe. 
  • In mid-winter or after heavy snow, it can become unsafe or impassable for cyclists due to snow/ice.
  • Local authorities and tourist offices recommend checking actual conditions before attempting the ride. 

Note: Other higher Alpine pass opening patterns are helpful context — Alp passes below ~1,500 m often only close due to snow cover and poor conditions, rather than fixed dates.

• Weather can be highly variable; snow or slush can persist even at lower Alpine passes.
• Cycling on exposed climbs like Col des Prés is challenging and often unsafe without dry, clear conditions.

• Transition season: warming gradually but still snow and wet periods possible.
• Snow melt can keep roads wet/slushy into late April or May, especially after heavy winter snowfall.
• Pass may be open earlier than high passes, but still subject to closures after snowstorms.

• Best cycling conditions: warm temperatures, long days, and the lowest likelihood of snow.
• Thunderstorms are common in the afternoon/late day in the Alps — especially July–August.
• Even in summer, temperatures at altitude can be noticeably cooler than in valley towns. 

• Early autumn is often excellent — cool, stable weather and scenic colours.
• By mid-October, conditions can turn unpredictable with cooling temperatures and early snow.
• Later in autumn, snow and ice can return quickly, making descending dangerous.

• For Alpine regions, temperature usually drops ~6–7 °C per 1,000 m elevation gain compared to nearby valleys, so even warm valley days can be cool atop Col des Prés. 
• Weather in the mountains can change rapidly — sun, rain, or even snow can occur in the same day.

• June through September: most reliable period with warm weather, dry roads, and long daylight.

• Late spring / early autumn: possible snow remnants, wet roads, and chilly mornings.
• Storms in summer afternoons: heavy rain and lightning can make climbs dangerous.
