🏔️ Opening / closing pattern

  • This pass is not open year-round — it’s a high alpine road typically usable only in summer months
  • Official notices show it can be closed indefinitely when bad weather hits, even outside deep winter.
  • In one recent season it reopened late September after weather closure, showing how variable dates can be.

👉 Like most Alpine passes above 2000 m, exact opening depends on snowfall and snow clearing — some years they stay closed until early or mid-June, and early winter storms can shut them again by autumn.

🌦️ Seasonal conditions for cyclists

❄️ Winter (Nov–Apr)
  • Temperatures often around or below freezing at altitude (example alpine-pass climate: around −2 °C day / −11 °C night in Jan).
  • Snow and ice are normal; roads can be unsafe or impassable.
  • Authorities may require winter tyres or chains in mountain areas.

➡️ Cycling reality: basically not rideable for road bikes.
🌱 Spring (May–June)
  • Snow often still present early season; roads can be wet or icy.
  • At ~2000 m elevations, daytime temps in June can still be only 5–15 °C
  • Weather can switch quickly between sun, rain, wind, or snow.

➡️ Cycling reality: early season gamble — check snow depth before planning.
☀️ Summer (July–Aug)
  • Most reliable cycling window with warmer temperatures and longest daylight.
  • Expect afternoon storms and mountain showers.
  • Alpine summer highs generally fall roughly 12–24 °C depending on elevation.

➡️ Cycling reality: best time overall.
🍂 Autumn (Sep–Oct)
  • Often stable weather, cooler temps, and less traffic — prime cycling season.
  • Snow can start returning by late October.

➡️ Cycling reality: excellent until first snowfall.

🌬️ What to expect on the climb (year-round traits)

  • Temperature drops roughly 6–8 °C from valley to summit (typical alpine-pass gradient).
  • Strong crosswinds are common at the top.
  • Weather changes fast — clear skies can become fog, rain, or snow quickly.
  • Residual snow patches can remain even when the road is officially open.

🚴 Practical cyclist tips

  • Bring layers + windproof shell even in summer.
  • Descents can be very cold due to wind chill.
  • Check local pass status the day before — closures can happen suddenly.
  • Carry food/water: high passes often have limited services.

✅ Short summary

Col de la Lombarde is typically rideable from roughly June to October.
Best months = July–September.
Outside that window expect snow, ice, sudden weather changes, and possible closures — even if the road technically shows open.
