🌸 Spring (March–May)
  • Temperatures: ~5–18 °C depending on month and time of day.
  • Snow is still possible in early spring at ~1000 m altitude.
  • Roads may be damp, mossy, or covered with debris from winter storms.
  • Best time: late April–May when snow risk drops and traffic remains light.
Cycling note: Bring arm warmers and a windproof; descents feel much colder.
☀️ Summer (June–August)
  • Typical temps: 15–28 °C; cooler than the coast due to elevation.
  • Mostly dry, stable weather.
  • Occasional afternoon thunderstorms in mountain areas.
Cycling note: Ideal season — long daylight, reliable roads, minimal weather hazards.
🍂 Autumn (September–November)
  • Temps drop from ~20 °C in September to near freezing by November.
  • Increasing rainfall and fog possible.
  • Fallen leaves can make descents slippery.
Cycling note: Excellent riding in September–early October; later months become unpredictable.
❄️ Winter (December–February)
  • Temps often around or below 0 °C at night.
  • Snowfall is common at this altitude in the Maritime Alps.
  • Road may be:
    • icy in shaded sections
    • temporarily closed after snowstorms
    • covered with grit or salt
Cycling note: Ride only during stable weather windows; check local road reports before going.

🚧 Road accessibility

  • Official closure: none scheduled (not a high alpine pass).
  • Real-world closures: short-term winter closures possible after snowfall or landslides.
  • Most reliable access months: May → October.

⚠️ Hazards cyclists should expect year-round

  • Narrow mountain road with limited guardrails.
  • Shaded sections that stay wet or icy longer.
  • Occasional gravel after storms.
  • Rapid weather shifts typical of Maritime Alps microclimate.

🧭 Best months to ride

Top window: May – October
Peak conditions: June & September (best balance of temperature, road safety, and visibility)
Short summary:
Col de l’Orme is usually open all year, but winter snow and ice can temporarily block it. Expect cold, possibly snowy conditions in winter, mild and variable weather in spring/autumn, and warm, stable riding in summer. Best cycling months are late spring through early autumn.
