🗻 Col Agnel – Seasonal Access & Weather Patterns
❄️ Winter & Early Spring (Late Oct – May/June)
  • Road closed: Due to heavy snowfall and persistent snowpack, the pass is generally closed from late October until late June or early July. Snow makes the route impassable for vehicles and difficult or unsafe for cycling.
  • Weather: Very cold, frequent snow, ice and strong winds at altitude. Temperatures often stay well below freezing with substantial snow cover.
  • Cycling: Not practical; even if snow melts locally, snow patches, ice and avalanche risk make it unsuitable for road cycling.
🌸 Late Spring / Early Summer (Late June – July)
  • Opening period begins: Snow clearance crews work on the road, and most years Col Agnel becomes passable around mid-late June to early July, depending on winter snow depth and weather trends.
  • Weather conditions:
    • Lower sections: warming quickly with late spring conditions at the base.
    • Upper sections: still cool, with potential snow patches lingering near the summit early in the season. Temperatures can be chilly and variable — warm at the base, cold near the top with possible afternoon storms typical of the Alps.
  • Cycling: Increasingly excellent conditions for strong riders — but be prepared for cool conditions early and possible residual snow near the top.
☀️ Summer & Early Autumn (July – September)
  • Best cycling season: This is the prime period for riding Col Agnel.
  • Weather:
    • Daytime: generally pleasant alpine summer weather — mild to warm at lower elevations, cooler but comfortable near the summit.
    • Afternoons: typical alpine convection can bring thunderstorms, especially July–August. Sudden rain, wind and temperature swings are common.
  • Notes: Strong UV exposure, quick weather changes; early starts help avoid afternoon rain/storms. Good weather windows often last longer in September with generally stable conditions.
🍂 Late Autumn (October)
  • Closing period: As temperatures drop and snow returns, the pass starts closing again — usually by late October. Exact timing varies year to year based on early snowfall and road clearance.
  • Weather: Sharply cooling, increased risk of early snow and icy roads — not suitable for regular road cycling.
⛰️ Typical Weather Challenges to Expect
  • Temperature gradient: It can be warm at valley level but near freezing at the summit even in summer mornings/late afternoons.
  • Thunderstorms: Frequent in high mountains in summer afternoons — lightning risk and hail possible.
  • Wind: Strong winds near the summit are common and can make cycling harder or colder.
  • Snow risk outside July–Sept window: Persisting snowfields may block or limit access earlier in summer in cold years.
🧭 Summary (What Cyclists Should Expect)
Season Window:
  • 🚫 Closed: Late October – late June (road impassable due to snow).
  • 🚴‍♂️ Mostly Open: Late June / early July through September / early Octoberweather and snow conditions permitting.
Weather Conditions by Season:
  • Early season (June): Cool at altitude, possible snow patches.
  • High season (July–Sept): Best riding conditions; variable weather with warm valleys and cool summits, risk of afternoon storms.
  • Late season (October): Increasingly cold; early snow can close the pass early.
Cyclist Tips:
  • Start early to avoid afternoon storms.
  • Bring layers — it can be cold near the summit even when warm below.
  • Check local conditions just before your ride, as weather/snow can shift quickly.
