Wind forecast for your cycling route
Wind is the single biggest variable in how a ride feels — and a city wind forecast tells you almost nothing about what you'll face on the road. Wind funnels through valleys, builds over exposed ridges and changes direction as the terrain turns. RouteWeather shows you wind speed and direction at every segment of your route.
See wind, rain and temperature along every kilometre of your route — not just at the start.
Why a city forecast isn't enough
Knowing whether you'll face a headwind or enjoy a tailwind on each segment transforms ride planning. You can choose the best direction to ride, plan when to put in hard efforts and predict when you'll need to protect energy for an exposed section. Wind arrows along your GPS route make all of this visual.
What changes along a long route
- Wind speed and direction change across passes and valleys
- Temperature drops ~6–7 °C per 1000 m of elevation gain
- Rain and storm timing differs from city to mountain
- Your start time determines whether you ride into headwind or tailwind
- Weather windows shift depending on how long your ride takes

Check wind on your routeFrequently asked questions
How does headwind affect cycling speed and effort?
A 20 km/h headwind is equivalent to riding 3–5% uphill on flat terrain. At higher speeds the effect is even greater — aerodynamic drag doubles as speed increases. On a long route section facing a consistent headwind, your average speed can drop 5–8 km/h. RouteWeather shows wind direction relative to your direction of travel.
Can I see whether I have a headwind or tailwind on my route?
Yes — RouteWeather shows wind arrows at each segment of your route, taking into account your direction of travel. You can see immediately which sections will be assisted and which will require extra effort.
Does wind change along a long route?
Yes — and often significantly. Valley funnelling, exposed ridges and coastal effects all create different wind conditions. Seeing wind at every segment rather than a single point forecast is the only way to plan an efficient ride.
