Stelvio & the High Alps

Best months: Jul, Aug, Jun, Sep

4.0
Overall score

The Stelvio is the climb every serious cyclist eventually has to face. From Bormio or Prato allo Stelvio, the road claws its way up through 48 numbered switchbacks to 2,758m, with the Ortler glacier looming above the final kilometers. This is high-alpine riding at its most dramatic — thin air, hairpin after hairpin, and a summit that feels genuinely earned. Base yourself in Bormio and you're within reach of a full circuit of the region's legendary passes: Gavia, Mortirolo, Umbrail, and Foscagno, each with its own character and its own place in cycling folklore. The area combines brutally hard climbing with excellent infrastructure — well-marked roads, good cafés at the summits in season, and a strong cycling culture built up over decades of Giro d'Italia history.
