Cycling weather in the Italian Alps
The Italian Alps are home to some of the hardest and most beautiful cycling roads in the world — Stelvio, Mortirolo, Gavia. Weather here can be extreme: late-season snow, powerful afternoon convective storms and cold descents make knowing what's ahead essential. RouteWeather gives you conditions kilometre by kilometre.
See wind, rain and temperature along every kilometre of your route — not just at the start.
Why a city forecast isn't enough
A forecast for Milan or Brescia tells you nothing about conditions at the Stelvio summit at 2758 m. The Italian Alps sit at the junction of Po Valley humidity and Alpine altitude, making weather volatile and fast-changing. Seeing conditions along your GPS route is the only way to plan reliably.
What changes along a long route
- Wind speed and direction change across passes and valleys
- Temperature drops ~6–7 °C per 1000 m of elevation gain
- Rain and storm timing differs from city to mountain
- Your start time determines whether you ride into headwind or tailwind
- Weather windows shift depending on how long your ride takes

What is the best time to cycle Stelvio or Mortirolo?
Both passes are typically snow-free from June to October. Mid-June to mid-September offers the most reliable conditions. Morning starts are strongly recommended — afternoon storms can arrive quickly above 2000 m. Use RouteWeather to check conditions for your exact start time and route.
How cold is a descent from a high Italian Alpine pass?
At 2000–2700 m, summit temperatures can be 15–20 °C colder than the valley even on a sunny day. Add wind-chill on a fast descent and you can lose a lot of heat quickly. RouteWeather shows temperature at every point on your route so you can pack the right layers.
Does weather change along a long route?
Massively. A 100 km route in the Italian Alps can include valley heat, cold summit winds and everything in between. Route-based forecasting shows you each condition change so you can plan stops, clothing and nutrition.
